Anniversary Celebrations for Hill of The O’Neill & Ranfurly House

Hill of The O’Neill & Ranfurly House turns 10!

This month marks the 10th anniversary of Hill of The O’Neill & Ranfurly House. Doors were officially opened on October 24th 2012 by the then First & Deputy First Ministers, Peter Robinson and the late Martin McGuinness.

Anniversary Launch with local children who share our birthday!

In early September, Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Córa Corry welcomed children born in October 2012 at a special launch birthday party. Children and their families and enjoyed arts and crafts followed by birthday cupcakes. The birthday boys and girls took home some celebratory Hill of The O’Neill themed goodie bags.

Special events take place throughout October to mark this anniversary occasion.

View an exhibition of photographs of Hill of The O’Neill and Ranfurly House from Dungannon Cookstown Camera Club. The first group to exhibit work when the centre opened its doors in October 2012. This exhibition will be on show throughout October for all to enjoy.

On Saturday 22nd October, we invite children aged 7+ to join in ‘Way of The Warrior’, a journey of discovery, overcoming trials and taking part in the ultimate challenge and test of valour. Take aim with Archery. Try out a Sword Workshop and attempt a Spear Workshop.  Sound a battle cry at a Drum and Flute Workshop. Afterwards – you will have walked the Way of the Warrior!

Sure to be an action packed day while having fun fit for a warrior!

A series of planned History Talks titled ‘Faces from the Past – The Enigma of Iron Age Sculpture in Ireland’ . ‘ The Flight of the Earls’.  ‘Takin about the Plantation …what did it mean for us?’ and finally ‘Dynastic Dungannon – The Epicentre of O’Neill’s Own Country’

We welcome Newpoint players, one of Irelands leading drama groups for a special anniversary play. This is a political and historical fantasy play called ‘Trial of the Gaelic Lords’.

Lastly, a Basket Weaving Workshop recollects heritage crafts. This is in celebration of every piece of artwork that has been crafted, drawn, painted, sewn, embroidered and exhibited here in the past decade. Learn the ancient craft while making your very own traditional ribbed willow basket to use in your home. The ribbed basket is constructed from local materials and is historically associated with rural communities.

It is clear the residents of the district have great pride in Hill of The O’Neill & Ranfurly House and this has been obvious over the past decade through their support and custom.’

An extensive arts and cultural programme, including monthly art exhibitions and supported outreach programmes has run over the 10 year period. Also, it’s impressive education programme has won 2 prestigious Sandford Awards in 2014 and 2019 for excellence in the provision of heritage education.

Hill of The O’Neill Heritage Park has received a Green Flag Award an internationally recognised certification for environmental quality management for parks and open, green spaces. Additionally, the Event Space received a Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) Award for Excellence in Architectural Technology.

Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Córa Corry also said;

‘As an organisation, Mid Ulster District Council aims to develop, promote and sustain the arts in the area. It is clear that the work done here in this centre epitomises this vision. The Hill has welcomed over 220,000 people through its doors during the last five years alone – made up of tourists, budding and professional artists & makers, historians, musicians, drama groups, community groups, school groups and more.’
